Why Did I Fire a Client ?

Have You Ever Fired a Client ?

Why did I fire a client this past week ?   Or, in politically correct terms, I called and suggested we "part ways".   I stated that I could not sell his property for the price that he wanted and his expectations were just way too  high and unrealistic.  And most important, it was not fair to my other clients that I was spending time on his project that will never sell unless he was willing to be much more reasonable.   It was not worth my time and energy any more.

In business, it is important to make business decisions like these.  They are not easy as it looks great to have a $750,000 Why Did I Fire a Client ?listing.   I still had several months left on the listing contract.  And the seller even reminded me of that.   I told him I would rather just terminate it now and have us go our separate ways unless he was willing to be much more reasonable with counter-offers or change the listing price drastically.   Looking back, perhaps I should not have taken the listing in the first place, as I knew it was a very high initial listing price, but I felt that the seller would be willing to come down after seeing some comparable sales along the way.  I was wrong about that.  Sometimes it is worth taking the chance.

I certainly do not have any bad feelings towards the seller.  Heck, if someone else can sell this lot for 50 percent above market value, more power to them.    What is most important here is the business decision.  By clearing your book of "business" of these unsellable situations, you can focus on other clients and the properties that can sell as well as generating new business.   In addition, these types of clients can drain your energy.  So instead of being drained, why not be recharged with fresh new energy ?   For example, as soon as I hung up the phone, I immediately felt greatly relieved as I realized I was done with this with no more time spent on offers hundreds of thousands of dollars apart.

I posted the question "Have you fired a client recently" on Facebook and received a number of responses, my favorite being from my friend Frankie, a business owner, who said

"I've fired many clients in my career. It has given my full book space after unloading some dead weight and bringing in some new fresh energy. It has created much needed time, space, and sanity for me to grow and stay at the top of my game. Proven technique for professionals who are on top and can afford to do it off course"

So it is your turn.

Have you ever fired a client  ?  What is your experience ?

A Cool University City Cafe With Live Music ! Our Clients Rock, Literally !

A Cool University City Cafe with Live Music !

Our Clients Rock, Literally !

Stephanie and I were invited by a client to go see their daughter play in her band at this cool University City Cafe with Live Music including several bands each playing a set.  The coffee shop is  The Green Line Cafe in University City / Powelton Village.  We are so glad when we wentThank you Richard and Mindy (they are our clients) ! Their daughter who attends Drexel University, is an extremely talented musician and performer Connecting with Your Clientswith a phenomenal voice.  Her band "When I was 12" put on an excellent display of original music with charming melodies and great lyrics, and even had an encore.  The Green Line Cafe hosts a live music venue in a warm and cozy coffee house setting.  We really enjoyed being there and spending time with our clients. We do not get into the University City area nearly as much as we'd like to. This was the perfect opportunity to not only enjoy the live music but to spend time with our new friends.

In our business, we get the opportunity to meet with and connect with so many people ! But it warms our hearts when we get asked to mingle outside the office. For Mindy and Richard, the clients we mentioned above, going to see their daughter Adrienne perform in their band was one of the biggest complements we could receive. "When I was 12" is a great band but we are really the biggest fans of our clients.

It is the nature of our career to be instrumental (pun intended) in helping folks through the process of one of the most important times of their life.  We can really really develop a meaningful trust and camaraderie with our clients in a few short months. We feel like we know we are doing something right when after a settlement we can meet up with our clients for a celebratory dinner, mingle at a party or just hang out at a The Green Line, which to us is not only just A Cool Cafe in University City but a place we connected with great people ! The coffee is good too !

So, it will not be the last time we see When I Was 12. They will be doing many more shows in the future. The band has a few CD's that they SOLD OUT of at the Green Line Cafe the night we saw them. It will not be the last time we check out the cool live music in University City either. We'd like to check out a few more places like that.

Any suggestions?
