Greater Philadelphia Association of Realtors asks The Somers to Speak on Social Media and Blogging

GPAR asks The Somers to Speak on Social Media and Blogging

I was recently asked  to speak by the Greater Philadelphia Association of Realtors (GPAR) on the topics of blogging, websites and social media.  To me, this is one heck of a compliment as there are A LOT of Realtors in Philadelphia that could have been asked to address the subject.

GPAR asks The Somers to Speak on Social Media

Not for nothing, but I get quite nervous speaking in front of crowds.  However, since I have done it a lot more over the years, it has become a little bit easier each time.   I definitely do not want to disappoint people, and I certainly do not want to be a dud.   I better start preparing because come June 2nd I am going to have my "A game" on for those in attendance.  Or wait a minute ?  Maybe not...  What about sharing information to the competition ?   No worries.  Philadelphia is a large marketplace.  And besides, one thing I learned a long time ago.  The more you give in life, the more you receive in return.

If you would like to attend, the sessions will be on June 2nd from 1 to 3 at GPAR.

Inman Conference - Gary Vaynerchuck

Being at the Inman Real Estate Conference, Gary Vaynerchuck gave an inspiring speech.  Anyone looking for some strong inspiration, this is a must see.  It was even better in person !

Some of the highlights I picked up were:

1.  Get out of your house and make it happen !

2.  Own yourself - embrace your own DNA !

3.  Stop crying !

4.  Negativity rocks (not everybody wins) - this is the best time to gain market share !

5.  Build other revenue streams as part of your business.

6.  Give out content .

7.  Leverage the Community - it is one "giant ass" mixer !

To see the video, check out Chris Pollinger's post at:  Gary Vaynerchuck from the Inman Conference

Don't Forget About the Real World !!

Don't Forget About the Real World !!

A week ago being at the Inman conference, there was so much information that I gathered I have been on information overload.

Don't Forget About the Real WorldOne of the topics that was discussed by Ines and Jay Thompson was "Don't forget about the real world - using your offline efforts to support your online endeavors".  The one thing to take away from this discussion was "Get off your computer and get out in the world".  I think a reminder is that yes it takes hard work to get to page 1 on Google, but ultimately it is more important to make live connections with people.  Even more important than that, taking advantage of the opportunity to meet people, network, gain a few clients, do excellent work and ultimately grow your sphere of influence !!

I have seen it myself where I am in the middle of writing a blog, or doing some other social media stuff and the phone rings and I am hesitant to answer it because I am "busy"... WHAT ??  Or even worse, I may look to put off my follow-up calls because I want to get a new blog in or am doing something else on a Facebook, Plaxo or Twitter page... WHAT ??    Obviously our growth in the social media arena and the blogosphere is important, but nothing is as important with connecting with people - answering the phone, making appointments, getting off the computer and getting out in the real world.

I think this reminder applies to all of us no matter what industry we are in as the computer can be addicting... take a break and get out in the real world !

Some interesting suggestions we learned at Real Estate Connect that helps integrate online and offline marketing efforts were:

o   Pick a couple of your favourite restaurants and blog about them in a restaurant review.

o   Do a series post such as "Fun Fridays" or "Wordless Wednesdays"

o   Get out in your community - there are blog topics everywhere you look !

Bottom line is "Don't Forget About the Real World"  !

12 things I learned from Jeff Turner's Presentation "Go Beyond Blogging..." at Real Estate Connect

Jeff Turner gave a terrific presentation at the Real Estate Connect Inman Conference on "Go Beyond Jeff Turner at Real Estate Connect 2009Blogging - Integrate All of Your Web 2.0 Tactics"

The 12 things I learned from his presentation are as follows:

1.  Web 2.0 = interaction.  Social networking exposes the social graph.

2.  Social media is about engaging others, not selling them.

3.  I should set up an account on Flickr.  Also, the more interaction a social media site can be, the more influence that platform can have.  For example, blipFM may be really cool and fun, but there is not much interaction.

4. My blog should have links out to other sites that are informative to the reader.

5. I should introduce links to more people that come to me, especially leads and potential clients, to our blog, our site and social media pages such as Twitter (which is @thesomersteam <hint> )

6. There are 4 properties of Influence: Diversity, Autonomy, Openness and Connectivity (from Stephen Downes)

7.  It is important to understand the concept of influence ripples and to be in the middle of it !

8.  There are many social building blocks - is important to start building !

9.  It is critical to measure your success which includes: the size of your influence, the influence with your audience, your presence with your audience and your name recognition.

10.  I need to be more active with tracking analytics on our blog .

11.  It is a skill to sell yourself BUT not selling yourself.  For example, Jeff Turner did not mention Real Estate Shows when he gave his presentation.

12. Selfless giving opens the door to success !!

Lastly, do not email Jeff to communicate with Jeff, send him a direct message via Twitter instead !

Thanks Jeff for an awesome presentation !
