The Green Works Green Heroes Grant Program is looking for its next green hero.
The Philadelphia Orchard Project is one of the nominees. POP has planted 17 orchards in urban spaces all over Philadelphia and has partnered with public schools, community gardens, low income housing, and community centers to do so. It has empowered citizens to grow their own food and develop city space, all while beautifying and enriching the landscape in the process. It has brought Philadelphia closer to food security.
These heroic efforts can continue, and if POP wins the Green Works grant, they will use it to add five more orchards each year. The funds would help train groups and provide workshops to build and maintain the urban gardens, and many of them would be placed in neighborhoods that need them.
