Tip Jar: Measure Twice. Cut Once.

The Art of Life. Measure twice. Cut once.

When I was in art school many years ago, I could never forget my professor's advice on how to cut a proper frame. "Measure twice. Cut once!" he would always say in a highly overdramatized fashion. If he said it once, he said it 100 times! What my professor was saying was brilliant. Take good care in making sure you double check your calculations before you make the permanent cut. Because, some mistakes cannot be fixed and some errors cannot mend. This is a lesson that is as timeless as Shakespeare's sonnets. Its deeper meaning can be applied to so many things we do from baking cookies to romancing a partner. One mistake and the whole thing is blown! And if we heed my wise old professor's advice and learn to apply it, our lives will be so much more delightful.

Let me give you an example of a situation in Real Estate where this lesson was not applied. I might add that if you are a Real Estate Developer, Builder, or New Construction Seller, please perk up your ears and listen hard to this tip. Very recently I had a buyer do a home inspection on a new construction home with everything from a finished basement to a roof deck with a view of the city. The developer's contractors must have been in a rush because the result of the inspection produced a long laundry list of items that were faulty, unfinished, or perhaps I should say only "measured once". The result of so many seemingly unchecked calculations resulted in an utter catastrophe. My client interpreted these errors as careless mistakes and this created great doubt in her mind about the integrity of the property. This could be the end of this buyer's dream home. If the contractors took the time to do it right the first time, then the entire process could have been very different.

Taking care to do things right the first time is good advice that should be taken to heart. The Art of life. Measure twice. Cut once!
