Is the Sky the Limit in Developing the Delaware Waterfront?

Waterfront Piers: Like Jewels on a Necklace?Plan Philly provided another great recap of this past Tuesday’s meeting overviewing the Master Plan for the Redevelopment of the Central Delaware Waterfront. The plan is compared to that of a necklace, where the piers hang from the mainland like jewels from a necklace. A beautiful illustration and image, don’t you think? The ultimate vision is that once the jewels in this necklace are complete, opening the waterfront for public use, private developers will develop and improve areas around these jewels.

Victory is already being claimed.  The Philadelphia Live Arts Festival is moving forward with a dining and live entertainment venue across the street from the new Race Street Pier at the site of an old pumping station. Brilliant, I say!  The plan seems to be working! And as the domino tips, there are now rumors of other private developers making inquiries about neighboring Pier 9. Sky is the limit!

But before I float away into the nether-sphere, a good question was raised by Commissioner Patrick Eiding, President of the Philadelphia AFL-CIO. What about Jobs?  Unless these sites can employ thousands of people, what will sustain the vision long-term?

The answer is in the works. Read Kelly Patrick Gates' informative article to see what is being proposed to create more jobs for Philadelphia.
