Shhh! Our Favorite Philly Speakeasies and the Opportunity to Own One!

In Philadelphia, a speakeasy is not just a bar, although we certainly have a few of those. A speakeasy can be one of those businesses that are passed on through mostly conversation and reputation, that may not even appear to you as you walk by. And when you do finally discover yourself in this special, well-kept secret, you ask yourself "Why was I the last to know?"

One of those spaces that we dare to shed a little blog-light on is Betty's Speakeasy. This local, organic, fair trade confectionery in the Graduate Hospital area is an outlet for cupcakes, fudge, lunch, and even hosts monthly "Speakeasy Dinners".  You may see their cupcakes at places like Bodhi Coffee in Society Hill. But when you finally end up their shop and try a Yard's Saison cupcake with Apricot Buttercream, well, you won't want to share this secret with anyone else.

Another such business, for us, was the Little Candy Shoppe in Liberties Walk. Not many people realized that there was an actual candy store with ice cream and all of the candy you used to eat as a kid up for grabs inside in Northern Liberties. But those that did loved it and spread the word.  Soon enough, Daily Candy had voted it one of the  Top 12 Mom & Pop Candy Shops in the Country, 2011.  This candy shop is actually up for sale, so if you've ever wanted to own your own speakeasy (with sugar the controversial treat of choice!), then here is your chance to get in business!

Hush may sound like a salon tucked in the shadows, but this beauty destination, located on the second story of an historic Old City building, has high profile clients such as John Bolaris from Fox News.  Ask for Ruth or Nick, but don't tell 'em I sent you!

While we love stepping underground to have a cocktail at the Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co., we know there's a good chance we won't always get in. This bar is seats-only, so if there's no room for you, you have to wait until there is for entry.

Head to the back alley (on Ranstead Street) of El Rey Restaurant to have a drink at its sexy, low-key Ranstead Room.  It's incredibly dark inside, so watch your step. The best part? You can order some food from up front. Guacamole by candlelight...there's nothing quite like it.

Can't keep a secret? Spill on your favorite haunts.
