Summer produce is at its best, cheapest, and most abundant right now. You're living it up with those juicy peaches, perfectly ripe tomatoes, buckets of berries, so much corn and squash that you just can't handle all of it. So what to do? Well, before the season changes and you start complaining about those mealy tomatoes, can it already!
No, we mean it. Stock up on some canning jars, pick up some techniques from local canning blog, Food in Jars, and enjoy the fruits of your labor (and your farmers) all year long!
Pick It. Check out pickyourown.org and find some nearby farms to get the best deals on produce in bulk. Or simply go to your neighborhood farmstand and load up your basket.
Can It. You can stock up on canning supplies online or you can visit Terrain at Styers in Kennett Square, which is like Canning Mecca: they have everything from canning recipe books to labels and the cutest pickle and jam jars that we have seen yet. For Canning 101, visit FoodinJars.com.
Give It. Everyone loves an edible gift in a jar. Your pregnant sister-in-law will be thrilled when you drop by with pickles. Share a local jam with a visitor from out of town who has never had access to amazing Jersey blueberries. Stock up on your favorites for the impending Rapture. Oh, we're kidding now, but don't come knocking on my door when you're out of food...Your cupboards will be full all year long and you'll always have a quick gift on hand.
What are your favorite items to can?
