Things to Do in Brewerytown: Bike Fairmount Park

Biking in Fairmount Park is one of the best ways to spend an afternoon weekend in Philadelphia. It's especially easy for those that live in Brewerytown or the Art Museum/Fairmount areas, because the Park is practically your back yard. The gorgeous views and fresh air will help you unwind, and the winding roads that hold the secrets of Fairmount Park will satisfy any adventure-seekers.

Some persistent riders even make it all the way to Devil's Pool, a secret 30-foot waterfall in the Park.

You can check out the Fairmount Park site for trails in the area that are suitable for any rider, whether you are a beginner or a seasoned cyclist. Even if you don't bike, Kelly Drive is perfect for jogging.

Ready to Drink Philly Ale at the Philadelphia Zoo?

If you're an adult and you've never been to the Philadelphia Zoo (or haven't gone since that class trip years ago), the Summer Ale Festival is an opportunity to have an animal adventure, grown-up style. If you happen to live in nearby Brewerytown, just consider this instead of another evening at your local pub.

This is the second year for the annual fundraising event brought to us by the Philadelphia Zoo and Rolling Barrel Events. Expect lifesize LEGO brick animals as part of Creatures of Habitat: A Gazillion Piece Animal Adventure. Craft beer from several breweries including Dock Street, Manayunk Brewery, Philadelphia Brewing, Victory, and others will be on tap. Regional cuisine from local favorites like Cantina Dos Segundos, the Abbaye, Rembrandts, and more will be served.

During the event, you can vote for Philly's Favorite Summer Beer. The beer that receives the top votes will be announced in the July/August issue of Philly Beer Scene Magazine.

Tickets range from $25 for designated drivers to $55 for general admission and $80 for VIP access. You can purchase tickets on the web site.

We're a city that loves animals just as much as we love our beer, and with this event, you can have a good time appreciating both.

Our Favorite Kind of Math: Art + Soul Food in Brewerytown

Art + Soul Food Brewerytown

Art is soul food. Soul food is art. The two go together nicely, and the second year of Art + Soul Food in Brewerytown is this Saturday, June 12 from 2 - 6pm. From 26th to 29th Streets along Girard Avenue, the sights and smells will envelop you. On the sidewalk, 20 businesses and galleries will celebrate the arts and delicious tastes of soul food. While you're at it, you can watch some art in progress. Muralist Willis Humphrey has plans to paint a new mural with volunteers during the event. Brewerytown's own Darryl McCray (known as Cornbread, the godfather of graffiti in Philadelphia) will debut the trailer of his documentary "Cry of the City". The Heineken Afterparty will be held at North Star Bar.

Make sure you get a piece of that cornbread.

Plans Brewing in Brewerytown

BrewerytownThe Brewerytown Neighborhood Plan has been released and it's a pretty insightful read. The Vision section paints Brewerytown as a "gateway to North Philadelphia and Fairmount Park bottom up - a model for grass-roots community redevelopment in Philadelphia, one community of tolerance, respect, and diversity."

The plan also announces Brewerytown's upcoming community website, which will serve as a resource to communicate ideas and keep track of developments and changes in the neighborhood. The list of initiatives includes hosting events, organizing block watches, and neighborhood cleanups and litter-free zone efforts. It goes into detail of land use and intentions to reclaim untended spaces and improve the streetscape. And of particular excitement to locals? The push for a grocery store on West Girard and the role of Girard Avenue as a destination in Brewerytown's future.

If you don't know much about the Brewerytown neighborhood, reading the plan gives you a much closer look and a hopeful glimpse of its future. And if you have suggestions? Let them know what you think.

What's up with...Brewerytown

BrewerytownThe neighborhood of Brewerytown extends from the Schuylkill River to 25th Street in North Philadelphia. Historically, Brewerytown was the site of numerous breweries, particularly during the 1800's when it had more breweries than most areas in the state.

Brewerytown 's West Girard Avenue corridor is the site of many new businesses, newly-constructed homes, art galleries, and retail spaces. Along it you'll find a record store, plenty of soul food restaurants, and easy access to Northern Liberties and Fishtown via the Route 15 trolley. It's also a quick walk to the Art Museum and Fairmount.

Mugshots Coffeehouse (pictured below) will open a second location here, and already runs a successful shop in nearby Fairmount. It will strive to be a community hub of local food, fair trade coffee, and arts events. Renowned artist Shepard Fairey recently completed a wheatpaste mural, adding a little more street sass to the ongoing arts movement in Brewerytown.

The City of Murals Gets Two More from Renowned Artist

Mural ArtsThe folks at MM Partners, LLC just alerted us to some live mural action happening later today in Brewerytown. Their office at 2621 Girard Avenue will get some sweet mural treatment from the Mural Arts Program and artist Shepard Fairey at 4 pm. Their new neighbors Mugshots, who are currently at work on their second location at 2831 Girard, will be on hand with refreshments for the onlookers.

Fairey, as many well know, is famous for his OBEY campaign featuring Andre the Giant and the Obama HOPE poster. So it's pretty exciting news to hear that Fairey and his assistants will make a stop in Philadelphia to add wheat paste murals to our neighborhoods. They'll start at noon at Rocket Cat Cafe (2001 Frankford Avenue) in Fishtown and then head over to the MM Partners Office. Young adult volunteers from Mural Arts Mural Corps will join them in the process.

Now MM Partners will be even easier (visually) to keep an eye on, as they consistently work on revitalization projects in Brewerytown that have people paying attention. We love watching West Girard develop into something great, and these are the guys that are behind that. A mural from one of the world's best and a community coffeeshop from an already successful business model are exactly what Brewerytown needs.

So go watch some mural history happen and while you're at it, get a feel for what Brewerytown is all about.
