The Fastest Way to the Jersey Shore is through Whitman!

Sun, sand, and tans. It’s that time of the year again when shoobee families pack their cars with towels, sunscreen, and bagged lunches to head down to the Jersey shore. The shore traffic starts early on Friday afternoon and doesn’t stop until late into Sunday night. Sound familiar? We have all spent our fair share of time sitting on the AC Expressway going nowhere fast.

If you are lucky enough to live in the Whitman neighborhood of Philadelphia, you will have the edge above everyone else during this crazy weekend rat race.

In the Whitman neighborhood, you are so close to the Walt Whitman Bridge that you won’t have to waste precious beach time sitting in your car in heavy traffic.  So load up your car, crank up the tunes, turn on the AC full blast and hop on the Walt Whitman Bridge - “The Fastest Way to the Jersey Shore”.

Welcome to Whitman: Your Ticket to Tailgating

From hot wings and brats to burgers and steaks on the grill, there’s nothing like a tailgate party to get everyone in the mood for the big Phillies game. Fortunately, you don’t have to be at the stadium to enjoy one. With a bit of planning and a few decorations, you can throw a winning tailgate party right in your own backyard which is only a stone’s throw away from all the major sport complexes.

That's how we do it in Whitman...

Wait, wouldn’t this mean it isn’t a tailgate at all? In a sense, yes, it wouldn’t be the same, but if you want to save money and still get everybody together for the big game it might be better to just have the party at home. You can do all of the things you would do at an actual tailgate, but you’ll be in the comfort of your own home, won’t have to spend a lot of time and money on the day of the big game, and you can get by using a lot of the items already in your home. Score.

Most people would agree that the high cost of gas is keeping them from going to the game. The rising cost of tickets and food is also a contributing factor. When you live in the Whitman neighborhood you can feel like you’re at the stadium without even leaving your house. Who says that you have to be at Citizens Bank Park to hear the roar of the crowd after the Phillies hit a home run? When you live in Whitman you can feel like you're at the stadium without paying for the expensive tickets and parking. You can also enjoy the spectacular Phillies 4th of July fireworks right from your own backyard free of charge!

Next time you get all bent out of shape as you hand the parking attendant multiple $20 bills remember you can always tailgate from the comfort of your own home in Whitman and still feel like you’re at the big game.

Welcome to Whitman: The No Judgment Zone

There is a hardcore pajama-wearing culture in the Whitman neighborhood of South Philadelphia — wherever and whenever they want.

Whitman-ites don’t care what you think, or how taboo it may be wherever you are from. Pajamas are comfortable and lightweight and efficient. No need to expend that energy in order to change all those clothes. Although Whitman-ites aren’t confident enough to embrace wearing pajamas any further than the corner store or local playground, they are totally rockin’ their look all day any day in Whitman.

There is no stigma attached, no thoughts that depression must have led to this decision to wear pajamas all day long, no awkward interactions — just pajamas: pajamas walking, pajamas biking, pajamas shopping.

Whether it’s the midnight stroll in the dead of winter or the early morning walk before the sun comes up, it’s always a classy move to roam Whitman in pajamas. Skip the skinny jeans and those uncomfortable heels and embark on your own personal journey of freedom to wear what you want, when you want.  Why should kids get to have all the fun on “Pajama Day”? Wearing pajamas outside of the house combines nighttime comfort into daytime fun.

Whitman is not only the Pajama-wearing center of Phillly, it also has a walk score of 91!  At least where I live.

What do you think of the daytime PJs trend - is it a go or a no? Ever see this in your own neighborhood?
