Nightmare on Hancock Street. A True Story...

It was the during the heat wave of April 2009 when I made the showing appointment. I handed over my business card in exchange for the keys to the meat Packing Plant in Old Kensington. "Be careful!" said the the Realtor representing the owner of the commercial property for sale. "It's dark in there!" he devilishly chuckled. I hurried to my double parked car on Girard Ave and met my clients at Quince, a gourmet coffee shop down the street in Northern Liberties to pick up the 2 women for our showing around the corner. "We like unique spaces!" my clients exclaimed as we pulled up in front of the grey washed building located on N Hancock Street. We knew it was the place right away when we saw the sign that read "Fresh Salami." I love salami!", I thought to myself as I realized I had skipped lunch.
We entered the old factory to be greeted by pitch blackness though we managed to find our way to a light switch that dimly lit our path to... dare I say... the carving rooms. The carving rooms were small windowless chambers with blood red ceramic brick floors and drains neatly cut out in the center. "Let's take the freight elevator to the 2nd floor." suggested Nancy and Nancy. So we carefully entered the steel box, slammed the cold metal gate down in front of us, and held our breath hoping there was no one at the top to greet us with a rusty meat hook !

Our tour ended, we made it out alive, and our exciting journey was indeed memorable. This amazingly cool building was not for my clients but it is a phenomenal venue for a tiny underground night club or a industrial gallery space, or some other creative business if not used as deli or meat packing plant.
So, if you want a tour of the Meat Packing Factory, BUYER BEWARE ! Prepare yourself. Stay away from your favorite classic horror and slasher flicks for a full week and call me for an appointment that will chill and thrill...
... That is, if you dare! Ha ha ha ha ha... (fiendish laugh intended)

This is priceless. Real imagination.
Be sure that there is no way I'd have gotten in that elevator.
All I can think of is the start of the first Blade movie. Hey, you could have done Rocky beating sides of beef
D
Sweet. that looks like a fun place.
Stephanie- Great story. I think you are right. This would make a great theme club. Have you spoke to anyone who might be interested in putting something like that in there??
The only thing that could have made it creepier is if you would have visited this place in October.
What an awesome story! I hope you find a buyer for it.
WOW-- You should get this into a hard back book!
Wow - very cool...and scary.
Good luck finding a buyer, I think you may need it. :)
Great story, great showing! I hope you come across an investor with money and an imagination. I think that's one of the coolest things about big cities: really neat old spaces waiting for new life.
Lenn- LOL, I hear you. To be totally honest, if I did not have 2 other brave women with me, I would not have entered either !
Dave - I am not sure Rocky would have had the nerve to go in alone !
Marcus - It really is quite a place for the right buyer !
Terry - No kidding right ?? October would have been a little too creepy. Am going to mention this one to a few investors we work with for sure.
Cool story, like what you did with it. I agree with Dave, the opening scene of Blade crossed my mind as well. Hope you find someone with a really good imagination to do something really creative with it.
I love cool old buildings. It's always interesting. Thanks for sharing!
This is priceless! I was looking to see a bloody end, I like the twist.
At this moment I am saying to myself, it's only a movie, only a movie.
Great story, have to love the unique buildings we get to see!
Bridget - That would be great to have another chapter to the story !
Montana - This definitely has a foundation to a great eerie story.
Mark- LOL, I guess this property could have a stigma : ) . But seriously, it is an amazing place.
Dedra - Exactly ! This old spaces are just awesome and unique. And with the right investor with vision and creativity, the options and potential are endless.
Nice post, it is something new everyday in the crazy world of real estate!
You should re-post this in October!
Great post!
BOO Ahhhh! You gave me the creepy crawlies with your little story. >.<
I like your imaginitiveness (is that even a word?). Great story. Love the photos you attached. Great post.
Suesan- Yes, it seems like it is a good beginning to a new sci-fi flick.
Jen - The old buildings / warehouses are quite special. The original features can just be stunning sometimes.
Emmaniece - Just wait for the next chapter !
Joe- LOL, we are working on the rest of the script : )
Samantha - Yes, we all come across same great showing stories. This one we definitely thought was blog-worthy !
creeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy! That takes the cake for scary places to show! Love the writing!
I love the creepy stories, but I LOVE the photos even more !!! ....I think they are creepier than the story !!!!!
... very entertaining post !
Cheers guys !
Sheldon :o)
I wish I was that creative. Good job.
Haha fantasticly done! You have more courage than I do by far! I hope your clients appreciate it :)
The carving rooms is a very interesting point to bring up about a very unique property. Wouldn't let that door close behind me.
In this career choice, we see almost everything imaginable, don't we! Sounds like a classic trip.
Hmmmm.....am I seeing a made for TV movie about this place. Sure could be scary!
Chris - Looks like a fun change of pace. Thanks for sharing this story here.
Chris.... you should have been the person writing my short stories in 6th grade. We had to write one once a week as an assignment and I was late at turning mine in. Even though creative, we had to read them in front of the class and believe it or not, I was very shy back then. In any case, too bad I didn't know you then. ;o) Creative job on this one and I hope it sells... the building that is.
Not your ordinary showing for sure. Real estate takes us many places throughout our careers--and that's what keeps it interesting.
Stephanie - It sound like this an experience that you'll never forget.
Hey guys..really good story..different style for you..i really like it...I thought you were going to get it in the elevator..Thank you
HelpfulHannah your friend in Philadelphia
Have sold a slaughter house before. It was a different experience. Strange to walk around in those "cold" rooms and racks that transport half beefs between rooms that have huge saws in them!!!
I could almost hear the ominous bass playing...
Chris and Stephanie, I would have been Space Clearing as I went along :) I'm sure that's one experience I could do without but you're right about the potential of a place like that!
That was so brave of you. I just don't think I'd do it though. what suspense-feeling photos you did! Very nice.
Christopher and Stanphanie:
Chillllller!................................................
Richard
Fun stuff...your pix really add the right touch to this post!!
Great post! Thanks for the imagination - I was almost concerned till the end.
What a dev'lish smile on that freak in the last picture . . . . :P
OMG this blog was ingenious someone has real creative talent in your team. I loved it, doesnt hurt I love slasher films either. Great job and good luck.
Scarrrrrrrrrrry!! Is that last really neat pic a pic of you holding a meat hook at the window! The listing agent should hire you to put together a marketing presentation!! Unique and attention getting! Great job.
Sue
This is certainly beyond the call of duty. I would have been afraid to have gotten stuck int he elevator! I also would have had the police give an escort. Many agents are asking the police to come to empty properties. There have been some serious incidents in So. NH.
This has to be one of the coolest posts I have seen lately :)
It sounds like a great venue for a horror film. Definitely not my kind of place. I like light and airy.
Hi Christopher;
Great story....love the pictures, thank you for sharing.
Christopher/Stephanie -
This story has real "hooks"!
Meat hooks, that is!
Great place to rehab into a club, or perhaps loft living, if the market becomes a bit stronger!
Soldier on!
DEAN & DEAN'S TEAM CHICAGO
The title hooked me and I read the whole post which is good for me. Thanks for the read.
Chris and Stephanie - As someone who always loved exploring old building in his youth, I find this an exciting prospect of selling real estate in Philly. Although I have no love for the creepy basements of West Philly that I once found "cool" I think I'd still enjoy a trip through an old meat packing property. We have no basements here and the history of buildings for the most part is decidedly shorter (unless I move close enough to downtown, then I can buy and sell the Alamo), so its most the same houses day in and day out. I'm jealous that you get all the fun! However, in the future, please refrain from letting Stephanie in pictures like that. I always thought she seemed like such a nice, happy, normal woman - now...she kinda scares me. Please keep her away until we've determined that she isn't a flesh eating zombie, dream invading alien, or just good 'ol run of the mill serial killer. Thanks!
Good work!
Love it,... what great tale to tell. I love old buildings and historic properties. Was this the one Rocky practiced his boxing ?
Thank you, Jess Graves
This is fantastic, fantastical, and hysterical. I think I would have been creeped out myself! Glad you all made it out OK!!! :-) Great post!
Jason - You got that right ! Is one of the reasons we have the best careers as Realtors : )
Erica - Will do ! Great idea.
Wayne - Thanks : )
Lisa - Was watching a creepy movie last night and was thinking about this post !!!
Heather - Stephanie did a knock-out job on this one. I hope she does not change from Realtor to author. ~ Chris
Sounds like where they filmed Saw. I have shown a few old industrial buildings too, one hope is to not encounter little things like mice, rats or bats... very creepy.
Exit Hill - Stephanie is a great writer for sure. Looks like she has another calling !
Sheldon - Cheers !!! Thanks : )
Tere - It is in all of us !
Rochelle - The clients enjoyed it just as much. We all got a kick out of it. Was a lot of fun : )
Cameron - No way !! That is in the next chapter !
Hi Chris, Very entertaining story but I don't think I would have gotten in the elevator either!
Good story, thanks for sharing!
Patricia Aulson/Portsmouth NH Real Estate
We've all had our share of strange showing appointments, but most would probably say that meat packing plant was not in their repetoire!
Regina - Yes ! It is one of the fringe benefits of our career.
Anna - I think that is a great idea !
Jason - Agreed ! I think we are too serious sometimes so this is a great change of pace.
Jeff - I hear you ! It was Stephanie that wrote this one though - she is much more creative than I am. Although I am working on it !! : )
Norma - It keep it very interesting for sure !
HI Chris,
That was quite funny and creative! I live in South Jersey and have shown some interesting old factories here, but nothing like that. I'm with Len and Barb, though...NOT gettin' in that elevator!!! LOL Thanks for sharing that.
- Kim Thomas Realty Executives Brown & Pope, Voorhees, NJ
What an adventure touring the building and it sounds like an opportunity to view. I would not have gotten in the elevator though.
Fun story - I thought sure you were going to be stuck in a dark elevator. Glad you came out alive. :)
great story, hard to top. I did go to a xmas party at san quentin prison once, but it was not for sale!
I think I would have gotten the creepy-crawlies just from the listing agent telling me to be careful. Great job telling the story. I think the photo with the hook would have been scarier if you weren't smiling so big. Or maybe that is the scary part.
well put together Christopher, I was expecting a ghost or something, it does make it interesting to go see that building, maybe you ought to let the listing agent see what you wrote and what the comments are, perhaps he/she can see some advertising ideas here.
Antonio
Great blog. I love going through old buildings. My husband begs to go with me when I have an appointment at an historic home or building.
Absolutely wonderful description - I loved it! Thanks for posting!
Mary
Christopher and Stephanie- You guys are much braver than I am. I would be scared to death, I would not go in at all especially after reading what goes on in those plants in the book Fast Food Nation. Just the thought, makes me want to throw up. :) You are brave! Katerina
Robert - Quite memorable for sure !
Hannah - Yes, Stephanie wrote this one. I think it is a sign that I can be too serious : )
Judi - That is awesome. Curious to know who the buyer was for the slaughter house you sold. Did they use it for the same purpose ?
Chris - We should put that ominous music in the post !
Carole - The space is really amazing ! Great story behind it too : )
Mara - Yes the buyer helped out with the photos. Stephanie and the buyers had a great time !
Richard- LOL, just wait for the sequel !
I like the theatrics of this post! Keep up the good work.
Whoa. Your pics make it seem more to it. Would be great for a post in October too.
Dawn - The photos came out great for sure !
Steve - Hopefully Stephanie does not have this evil side that I am not aware of !!!!
Heather - Yes, I hope that Stephanie does not leave real estate to write a thriller novel now. She does have some great writing talent : )
Robin and Sue - Yes, that is Stephanie with the meat hook ! I think this post will give them some additional marketing exposure !! Is such a cool place.
Joan- You are right that Realtor safety is a big issue. And important. This is a great story and we are not trying to be too scary or "risky" per se. A police escort was not necessary although I could see why some may ask for that : )
Renee - That is what I told Stephanie ! I think it is our best. I can be too serious most of the time.
~ Chris
Very cooooool listing. It'll be interesting to see how the property re-invents itself.
Christine - LOL, I hear you ! Light and airy is great !
Anthony - Yes we were very pleased with the photos.
Dean - Yes, this place would be awesome for lofts or some sort of cool conversion.
Russ- LOL, Sometimes reading a whole post is a challenge. I am glad this one kept your attention as it is a great story !
Matt - I hope Stephanie was not infected with some sort of evil virus after showing the Meat Factory. She is so strong I'm sure she will be fine ! Yes, being in Philly certainly provides for a lot of unique excitement and opportunity in the real estate world as there are so many old building and neighborhoods changing and growing as well as a lot of fabulous development. We hope it continues !
