Happy New Year - South Philly Style !

On New Years day, Stephanie and I experienced something for the first time in a long time and that was the energy and the excitement of the Mummers day parade through South Philly.  After having dinner at N 3rd, one of our favorite Northern Liberties restaurants, we decided that we should go to Pennsport to see what it is all about.  Our cab driver would only take us so far as all of S 2nd St was blocked off from Washington Ave south.  We walked to our friends house who was having an open house and noticed that many people were having an open house.  It was crazy !

The whole area was packed.  People were dancing in the streets, singing and having a blast.  Mummers and their entourage would come by as part of the parade.  The energy and excitement was just amazing !  We have never seen so many beer cans and debri on the street !  We were so pumped up that instead of taking a cab back home, we walked the whole way !  The air was clean and brisk as we walked through Pennsport to Queen Village to Society HIll to Old City back to Northern Liberties !

Life is good !  It will be a great 2010 !!

I have heard of the Mummers Day Parade and just looked up what it is all about.  That must have been a fun time if you weren't too tired after New Year.

Chris, I grew up in South Philadelphia and was awakened every year, on New Year's day to the sound of the Mummer's Parade.  I have to admit that while I went every year, I hardly ever watched the parade, as it was more of a social event.  My mom would always have a big pot of soup on the stove and it was fun to be able to come home and warm up.  One year, I was newly married and my husband and I were passing a butcher shop and the sign said "hot roast pork sandwiches".  We went in to buy one and the store was mobbed.  It turns out it was a private family party.  We were lead into the back, fed hot soup and hot pork sandwiches and hugged and kissed like family.  I can tell you that this is not unusal for Italians in South Philly. It's one of my best New year's day memories.
