If the Schuylkill Riverbank looks more colorful this weekend, and by colorful, we mean lit up with blue and green orbs, don't worry that there's been an extraterrestrial invasion.
It's just part of DesignPhiladelphia, an interactive lighting installation titled Light Drift that will set 100 vacuum-formed orbs in land and water. The project comes to us from artist J. Meejin Yoon of MY Studio. What's so special about these lights? They're smart. From the installation description:
"The resting state of the field is a constant state of green. When a visitor approaches a land orb, the orb will start an “enticement mode” by pulsing between blue and green. If a visitor sits on the orb, the pulsing will transition to a blue state. The water orbs that align with the land orb will change colors at the same time, creating a linear extension of blue lights in the water."
The installation will be on exhibition October 15-17, 2010 at Schuylkill Banks between Market Street and Chestnut Street.
